Spring Has Sprung! (But it's not time to plant your spring bulbs)

Spring is a season of new beginnings, and what better way to celebrate than with a burst of colorful blooms from flower bulbs? Flower bulbs are an easy and inexpensive way to add some vibrancy to your garden or outdoor space, and they come in a wide range of colors and varieties. Whether you’re filling out an existing bed or starting your landscaping from scratch, planting flower bulbs can be a great way to add beauty and interest to your outdoor space.

One of the most popular spring flower bulbs is the tulip. Tulips come in a variety of colors, from classic reds and pinks to bright yellows and oranges. They are also very easy to plant, requiring only well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight. They are also relatively easy to grow and care for, making them a great choice for beginners. Other popular spring flower bulbs include daffodils, crocuses, and hyacinths. Daffodils come in a variety of colors and sizes and are known for their trumpet-shaped blooms. Crocuses are small but mighty, with vibrant purple, yellow, and white flowers that pop up early in the season. Hyacinths have a strong fragrance and come in shades of blue, purple, pink, and white.

I love getting bulbs from our local Botanic Garden sale because they carry a wide variety of bulbs beyond the stereotypical varieties you find in most stores. If you don’t have an option like that near you I’d recommend checking any garden nurseries in your area as they typically have good options as well. Bulbs usually look best when you plant more than you think you need, so get a variety and a decent quantity.

Although spring is NOT the ideal time to plant spring bulbs, it's still a great time to start planning your garden for the upcoming fall planting season. Most spring bulbs, such as tulips and daffodils, need to be planted in the fall in order to bloom in the spring. However, that doesn't mean you can't start thinking about what you want to plant and where you want to plant it.

Use this time to observe the sunlight patterns in your garden and identify areas that receive full sun or partial shade. Consider the color palette you want to create and choose bulbs that will complement each other. Do some research on the specific bulbs you're interested in planting and make notes about their planting depth, spacing, and preferred soil type. By taking the time to plan now, you'll be ready to hit the ground running when fall arrives and the planting season begins.

Spring bulbs are a beautiful and easy way to add some color and life to your garden or outdoor space before the rest of your landscaping has even woken up! With a little bit of planning and care, you can enjoy a stunning display of blooms all season long!
