hi, and welcome to steel silk!

where we show normal people how to do extraordinary things and keep modern living simple

We’ve been married since 2014 and now live in Northern Colorado with our dog and two cats. Kevyn is an engineer and Lydia is a music teacher but during our spare time we love working on projects to improve our first home. Our idea of a successful weekend is one where at least one neighbor looks at us funny or says “I could never do that”. We hope to inspire and empower our neighbors next door and across the internet to find joy in their home projects and make their spaces more functional and beautiful.

I'm a teacher, wife, and puppy+kitty mama, and I love to find ways to make our house modern, natural, and cozy. I’m always on the lookout for ways to create a quality, personalized design aesthetic on a budget. We do most things ourselves, from design to execution, so I share behind-the-scenes peeks at our design process and how our lifestyle ties into our decisions. I hope to inspire and enable you to become the best version of yourself and create a life you love!

Kevyn

I’m an engineer by day, and a DIY-er, mechanic, and woodworker by night. I have a passion for all things design and building, and love to get my hands dirty while learning new skills. I believe that you can learn anything with enough work, and hope to inspire others to not only learn new skills, but to also approach problems and goals in a way that will set you up for success. Design is a powerful tool when used correctly, and I hope that through sharing our process and projects that we can inspire you to learn and DO!

Clearly, the most important member of the team…

Atlas is a 4 year-old long-haired, bi-color German Shepherd - yep, full German Shepherd, not mixed with anything. He loves playing F-E-T-C-H, walks, pets, and chasing his kitty brothers. His favorite weather is definitely snow, but, as long as there’s water nearby, the sunshine is okay too!

Mithlond has been Kevyn’s daily driver for 10 years, but was only recently was lifted in 2019. The paint may be rough at the moment, but it’s always gotten us where we’ve needed. We’re excited to put some more time an effort into Mithlond to make it more offroad-worthy, and take it on many adventures in the coming years!
